Server virtualization has greatly increased the number of IO interfaces required on the physical servers. With consolidation ratios as high as 20 virtual machines to 1 physical server, the amount of IO required on the one physical server can be tremendous. If you consider that often the original servers may have had separate physical connections to different networks for security reasons, the demand for ports on the new physical server can be extremely high. We often see servers with 10-16 ports of various kinds. This number of ports can have a very significant effect on the cost of the physical servers as more slots are required. The extra slots drive up the space requirements and increase the number of fibre channel and Ethernet switches. The end result can be a cabling nightmare with inefficient utilization.
